Lenticular Cloud -02 - Denali National Park
"Pile of plates" lenticular cloud (altocumulus lenticularis) downwind of Mount Mickinley in Denali National Park, Alaska. Lenticular clouds form in broad waves of upward and downward airflow that is produced when strong horizontal winds encounter mountain barriers, causing the air to rise abruptly and oscillate downstream. If there are several thin layers of high-humidity air, a strange UFO-like pile of plates formation may be produced.
