Wave Clouds - November 16, 2012 - Sunrise
November 2012 was a tremendous month for mountain wave clouds in the Denver area. Day after day the sky was filled with standing wave clouds, lenticulars, billows, ripples, and fragments of rotors, as strong westerly winds impinged on the Rocky Mountains, producing vertical oscillations in the airflow downstream. A nearby smoldering forest fire made sunrises and sunsets particularly red. A wave cloud crescendo on November 24th topped it all off with overlapping, folded layers of iridescent-fringed wave clouds that resembled an intense auroral display at times. All photos in this gallery were taken near Lafayette, Colorado.
